Microsoft’s annual Xbox convention has brought as a massive amount of news on Dead Rising 2. First and foremost we have a release date. The game will be released this summer! An August 31st release for North America and September 3rd for Europe. Very sudden but also very welcome.
Then there is the Xbox 360 exclusive Dead Rising 2: Case Zero mission that will be released before the game. It will be a playable prologue to Dead Rising 2 which will introduce us to our new protagonist Chuck Greene and link the original games events to the sequel. No pricing or release date has been given at this time. To see the new weapon creation system in action check the screens after the jump.

Now before you start buying your movie tickets know this. The film won’t be in theaters but on Xbox Live and the official website later this year. The film was actually co-written and directed by Dead Rising creator Keiji Inafune. The film will revolve around brothers George and Shin. While one brother remains wheelchair bound that doesn’t stop him and his sibling from fighting off the zombie horde in the most absurd way possible. Dead Rising the movie is looking to be pretty true to the source material from just the short trailer that’s available. Lots of gore and FPS scenes and even armored wheelchairs. The exact release date and price (If there will be one) has yet to be announced.

It seems Dead Rising 2 will remain a media no show until the Tokyo Game Show. Speaking with MTV Multiplayer, Senior Director of Communications, Chris Kramer stated that Dead Rising 2 will be showing at TGS along with other Capcom titles. So don’t expect any news at PAX or Comic Con. Capcom is still afraid of the swine flu epidemic and is keeping its Japanese higher ups like Keiji Infafune away from viral danger. Kind of ironic isn’t it?

Blue Castle’s latest trailer for Dead Rising 2 is live! Even thought they aren’t the original team, Dead Rising 2 looks to be a great sequel to the series. We also get a little glimpse at the staggering 7000 zombies on screen accomplishment that BC Games somehow managed to do. Perhaps with a little help from Satan. Dead Rising 2 isn’t expected until 2010.

After that whole debacle with Mental Mill rep Laura Scholl, it appears that Dead Rising 2 will indeed have a multiplayer component. “Rest assured we are going to put multiplayer in the game,” Capcom’s head of development Keiji Inafune had to say at a recent press event. “I can’t go into specifics about what type of multiplayer as that directly relates to some of the game systems that we don’t want to talk about at this event. It will be online multiplayer.” states Inafune. So there it is. 100% confirmed, not a mistake of words. Dead Rising 2 WILL have online multiplayer of some sort. Now we are left to ponder, what could it be?

In the original Dead Rising we played as Frank West. Photojournalist. Our new protagonist is named Chuck Greene. Yup, his name is Chuck. No word if he has covered wars as well. Could this possible name change have anything to do with the mightiest warrior in all the land ? Only developer Blue Castle Games knows.

Laura Scholl, the Product Manager of Mental Mill software really enjoys letting the cat out of the bag. Today she has let some information leak on Dead Rising 2. Laura Scholl has told of the multiplayer aspect of Dead Rising 2. The Mental Mill software will allows for 800 different clothing textures to simulate unique zombies on screen all 6000 of them, for multiplayer. No word on what kind of modes to expect, but they should be exciting non the less.
[UPDATE]: When Laura Scholl told Jeff Haynes of IGN that Dead Rising 2 was multiplayer, she was mistaken. Laura has contacted IGN about her misreporting and clarified that she meant MultiPLATFORM. Joystiq has also contacted Chris Kramer at Capcom for official word. Chris replied ever so mysteriously “We have not announced much about the game at this point.”
So there may or may not be a multiplayer component in Dead Rising 2, but it has of now NOT been announced. But certainly teased.
